Royal Mail increases prices but there are still savings to be made for those who choose to outsource their transactional documents

May 2011

Postage costs have seen a dramatic increase this month after Royal Mail upped their wholesale prices for bulk mail by up to 20%.

The price hike, approved by regulator Postcomm in February, far overshoots inflation and is being cited by many in the industry as ‘unprecedented’.

Emphasising that modernisation of Royal Mail’s Universal Postal Service is at the heart of their decision, Postcomm have claimed the cash injection will help to safeguard postal services for the UK’s 28m homes and businesses.

Universally hitting downstream access providers with a rise in the cost for Royal Mail’s ‘final mile’ delivery service, many senders of transactional mail are finding  it more important than ever to identify any efficiencies that can be made throughout the mailing process.

Linda Scott, CEO of transactional mail specialist Opus Trust Marketing said: “It is disappointing to see such a dramatic rise in the cost of sending bulk mail; however at Opus we are pleased to say that through our mail consolidator and postage consultation services we can still uncover opportunities for customers to reduce their costs.”

Scott continued: “We now have a growing electronic service offering to match our print capabilities, so customers who are seeking innovative solutions to lessen the blow of these price increases should not hesitate to speak to us for ways they can keep control of the costs for distributing their communications.”

The rise in the price of bulk mail follows the April increase of 3p for the price of second and first-class mail, taking the cost up to 28p and 39p respectively for those sending mail with a Royal Mail account.
