Charity - Begins at Work!
January 2008The majority of organisations would like to be good to their workforce and to the local community. It's a win-win situation for any employer. But is it all too costly a burden or is there a way to square the circle?
OTM has managed to improve its employees' health and fitness whilst giving £1200 to charity.
It's all due to the decision to install a gymnasium, pool table and payphone in the company's Leicester-based HQ. The company's employees value the facilities, and the profit from the money raised is donated to local charities, after being match-funded in a generous gesture by the firm's owner, Peter De Haan.
OTM has established a small committee that considers the work of local charities and allocates funds. In the past year, £600 has been raised from the facilities which became £1200 when matched by Mr De Haan.
Of this, £800 has been donated to Leicester Hospitals 2007 Equipment Appeal, £200 to the New Parks Young People's Club and a further £200 to Vista, an organisation that helps blind and visually-impaired people.
Gill Rees of OTM, who overseas the committee, says: "It's a real win-win situation. The more we encourage our employees to get fit, the more we raise for charity".
Employees benefit from £1 per visit gym membership to use the rowing machine, treadmill, step machine or weights.
