Medics opt for Bioplastics for member communications

June 2008
The General Medical Council (GMC) has chosen environmentally-friendly Bio-film to wrap its ‘GMC Today’ newsletter, which goes out to all registered doctors.

The decision has been taken as part of a major review into the bi-monthly publication, which looked at how production costs could be reduced and the ‘green’ credentials improved.

The review, which took place with OTM, looked at all current processes in relation to the publication with a view to introducing more cost-effective print and production methods and where necessary, re-engineering the mail pack to create cost benefits for the GMC. Subsequent improvements have lead to overall reduction in the unit price per pack, noticeably in relation to the overseas element of the mailing.

OTM, which itself is pioneering environmentally-friendly initiatives within its sector, encourages customers to consider a similar approach. With this in mind, the GMC was keen to offset cost savings by considering suggestions for greener options.

OTM’s recommendation was Bio-film, made from Bioplastics. At present the GMC uses non-Bio-film products to polythene-wrap its publication but has now taken the decision to opt for the greener alternative. Bio-film is 10 per cent more expensive, but has numerous benefits to the environment.

Evan Bath, Operations Director said: “Bioplastics are thermoplastic polymers made from renewable resources like natural and sustainable potatoes instead of crude oil. These Bioplastic granules are processed to produce thermoplastic resins. The results are biopolymer materials which can be used in the same way as traditional synthetic plastics. Film made from Bioplastics is a short-life biodegradable product.

The General Medical Council will start using the Bio-film alternative from June 2008.
