Ongoing commitment and eco activities
We understand how our business impacts on the environment from the constant review of each and every aspect. We identify key areas and promote improvement throughout the organisation.
Measuring and monitoring
Our most significant aspects are measured on a monthly basis. Annual figures for waste and energy give a baseline against which we target improvements. Monthly results, our Environmental Performance Indicators, are reported to the Board and Environmental Management Team. Continual monitoring ensures the impetus for improvement is not lost.
Working Together For a Greener Future
As a key link in the production chain we work with our suppliers, contractors and clients to reduce environmental impact in every way we can.
- Clients are assured of environmentally friendly raw materials and we work with them to save paper by intelligent white space management, the use of TransPromo documents and the removal of duplicate and redundant mailing addresses
- Machine suppliers work with us to reduce waste and save energy
- OTM work with our contract cleaners to reduce or replace potentially harmful chemicals, reduce the number of plastic bins liners used on site and continue to work together to improve waste management across the facility
- OTM employee induction includes training in environmental awareness. The necessity to segregate waste is included in all our operational procedures
Reduce
Reduction of waste to landfill is one of OTM’s most important and most successful objectives. Careful streaming of waste and the introduction of operational procedures have resulted in a reduction of over 80%.
Personalised, targeted communications can reduce unnecessary and unwanted mailings. Our electronic archiving and retrieval solution offers your business the means to become paper-free.
ReUse
We recycle paper, cardboard, polythene and plastics, wooden packaging and metal, including aluminium drinks cans. We also currently recycle an amazing 98% of our waste. However, we still strive to improve.
Recycle
Working with printer suppliers we return toner bottles and other containers f
or reuse.
Our Receptionists collect and despatch office toner cartridges for reuse or recycling.
Replace
We have Chain of Custody Certification status for the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) which means that, if required, we can trace and verify that the paper we purchase is grown in certified forests. All of our other paper materials are bought from sustainable sources. We are happy to use recycled paper and always work with our clients to ensure we use the materials appropriate to their needs.
Bright Ideas
Energy use is an impact on the environment we have been determined to reduce. The results speak for themselves. Since our energy saving campaigns began our Leicester site has reduced energy usage by 46%. We set ourselves specific objectives and ambitious targets. For example, we identified unnecessary usage over closedown periods and reduced this by over 30%.
Carbon Emissions
Regular monitoring and measuring of energy usage keeps us aware of our carbon footprint. Rather than seeking to offset we invest in schemes to reduce our emissions.
Investment in Technology
We installed state of the art light fittings which use less energy as well having sensors reacting to motion and natural light. In the coming year we will be updating our air conditioning systems and looking at voltage optimisation equipment.
Reducing Travel Emissions
Although we have no company vehicles we are promoting ways to reduce business mileage. Use of public transport, video-conferencing and car sharing are just some of the options. Both OTM sites are well served by public transport and employees can obtain service information from our Environmental Manager or HR Department.
Objectives and Targets
Setting Objectives and Targets is fundamental to the continual improvement demanded by ISO14001 as well as the OTM Board of Directors. We address our most significant impacts and all departments of the company contribute to the success of each objective programme
ISO 14001
ISO 14001 in May 2006.Working to the guidelines of this international standard publicly demonstrates our environmental commitment. OTM Leicester achieved approval in 2006 and OTM Swindon followed in 2008. Both sites are subject to regular surveillance audits at which we are able to demonstrate continual improvement. Understanding of and compliance with environmental legislation is guaranteed. OTM’s Management Team set out our commitment in an Environmental Policy which is communicated to all key stakeholders in the business, not least our employees.
